The sanjū-karihimo is a type of cord that is designed with three elastic strands, which are used to shape the obi by threading it between them. Traditionally, it has been used when tying the obi for furisode (振袖) and was typically hidden under the obiage. However, recently, more decorative versions of the sanjū-karihimo, such as those made with lace, have been introduced, which can be worn visibly and look very cute. This type of sanjū-karihimo can be used not only for furisode but also for yukata, making the process of tying the obi easier. We encourage you to try out this new style of obi tying!
