A kimono does not have buttons or zippers. When wearing a kimono, you use these cords to secure around the waist and chest. Additionally, they are handy for holding towels used for adjusting the body or as auxiliary cords when tying the obi, so women find it convenient to have 3 to 5 cords for kimonos. Men typically find 2 to 3 cords sufficient. Even for yukata, having 3 cords results in a neat appearance.
